§ Lord Melchettasked Her Majesty's Government:
Which areas of the United Kingdom they estimate currently receive the highest depositions of acid rain, how the levels involved compare to the levels of acid rainfall in Scandinavia, and what steps have been taken in Scotland and in England to reduce the effect of acid rain.
§ The Earl of AvonThe United Kingdom Review Group on Acid Rain found the highest deposition of acid rain to occur in parts of Cumbria and in the West Central Highlands and Southern Uplands of Scotland. In these areas the inputs involved are of the same order as those of the high input areas of Scandinavia. There is still much uncertainty about the effects of acid rain in Scotland and England, and this is the subject of a substantial research programme in the areas concerned.
