HC Deb 28 April 1982 vol 22 c282W
Dr. Mawhinney

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the future funding arrangements for Harland and Wolff Ltd.

Mr. Prior

The Government have decided to make £47.6 million available for the continued support of Harland and Wolff Ltd. in the financial year 1982–83.

The Government have also authorised the company to take an order for a 170,000 dwt bulk carrier for the British Steel Corporation, announced by Harland and Wolff on 8 April.

In return the company will take all steps necessary to reduce its operating costs and improve efficiency. It must also demonstrate that this continued level of support is justified by increasing competitiveness so that the heavy burden on public funds can be progressively reduced.
