asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost of providing the Christmas bonus to (a) all those in receipt of supplementary benefit and (b) all one-parent families.

Mr. Newton

The cost of extending Christmas bonus to persons in the specified groups not already qualified would be:

  1. (a) about £16 million (based on December 1980 statistics)
  2. (b) £8 million to £8½ million.
