HC Deb 29 October 1981 vol 10 c413W

Mr. Whitney asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement about the extension of the tougher regimes pilot project to two more detention centers.

Mr. Whitelaw:

In the light of experience at New Hall and Send, I announced earlier this year that the tougher regimes pilot project would be extended to two more detention centers. It came into operation at Foston Hall and Haslar detention centers on 7 September. Their regimes are substantially the same as those at New Hall and Send, but slightly more emphasis is placed on the first two weeks of sentence, during which trainees carry out additional drill, parades and inspections and work on closely supervised jobs. Copies of the Department's guidance to staff at Foston Hall and Haslar about the pilot project have been placed in the Library of the House.
