The total number in the United Kingdom is 515.

Mr. Prescott asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorways there are in the United Kingdom; and what is the total mileage expected by 1985.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke:

There are 1,719 miles now. The total by the end of 1985 will depend on the progress made on new construction, but I would expect it to exceed 1,900 miles.

Mr. Prescott asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he has estimated the number of toll stations that would be required to enforce a toll regime on the M1; and what would be the estimated building costs, operating costs and possible minimum toll cost;

(2) what studies and estimates have been made of the installation costs of toll systems on the motorways.

Mr. David Howell:

I am considering possible methods of raising extra resources for road construction, but these do not at present include imposing tolls on existing motorways. I have not, therefore, estimated the installation or collection costs of a tolls system on the M1 and my Department has made no recent studies of the installation of toll systems on motorways.
