HC Deb 29 October 1981 vol 10 cc440-1W

Mr. Teddy Taylor asked the Lord Privy Seal why Her Majesty's Government were represented by a consular official at the funeral of the late General Dayan of Israel; and whether, having regard to the fact that France, West Germany and the United States of America were represented by senior Ministers, consideration was given by Her Majesty's Government to being represented by a Minister or by Her Majesty's ambassador.

Mr. Hurd: The Government had wished to send a Minister to attend General Dayan's funeral, but this was unfortunately not possible to arrange. The British ambassador was absent from Tel Aviv on local leave. During the weekend in question he was out of contact with the embassy, in a remote part of the Southern Sinai. The Government were therefore represented at General Dayan's funeral by the British counsellor and consul—general.
