HC Deb 29 October 1981 vol 10 c452W

Miss Richardson asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest estimate of the savings that will be made in a full year as a result of the abolition of the earnings—related supplement.

Mr. Rossi: It was estimated at the time of the passage of the Social Security (No. 2) Bill 1980 that there would be a saving of £385 million in national insurance benefit expenditure in 1982–83, though there would be some additional expenditure on supplementary benefit. I shall write to the hon. Member when the latest estimates of the savings are available.
