Mrs. Renée Short asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many construction workers at the latest available date were registered as unemployed in (a) the United Kingdom as a whole, (b) Wolverhampton and (c) the West Midlands.

Mr. Alison:

At 13 August, the latest date for which an industrial analysis is available, the number of people registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom who last worked in the construction industry was 380,698. The corresponding numbers for the Wolverhampton employment office area and the West Midlands region were 1,551 and 33,130, respectively.
