asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the future of the value added tax headquarters in Liverpool and the 320 jobs involved.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne:

As I have indicated in my reply to the previous question, that part of the Customs and Excise headquarters which is located in Liverpool is not under threat. However, as with any other part of the Civil Service, it cannot be exempted from the search for increased efficiency and must expect to bear its share of any savings that are made.
