HC Deb 28 October 1981 vol 10 c365W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of university graduates in the United Kingdom found first-time employment in industry in the latest year for which figures are available; and how many in the previous five years.

Mr. Waldegrave:

For graduates of United Kingdom universities in the academic year 1979–80, 27 per cent. of first degree, and 10 per cent. of higher degree graduates were known to have found permanent home employment in industry and commerce by 31 December 1980. These graduates made up 61 per cent. and 39 per cent. respectively of all who entered permanent home employment. Other graduates may take up further education or training, return to their home country overseas, enter temporary employment or be unemployed. Information for earlier years may be found in the annual publication of the University Grants Committee "Details of First Destinations of University Graduates", copies of which are in the Library.
