HC Deb 27 October 1981 vol 10 cc341-2W
Mr. Concannon

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many redundancies from factories located in Northern Ireland have been notified to the Northern Ireland Departments since January of the current year.

Mr. Adam Butler:

The information is not available in the form requested as the statistics kept by the Northern Ireland Department of Manpower Services do not segregate proposed redundancies in factories from those in other places of work. However, a total of 20,092 proposed redundancies were notified to the Department of Manpower Services during the period from 1 January to 30 September 1981.

These figures are not a true measure of the number of actual redundancies since many redundancies do not in fact take place—for example, because of subsequent applications under the temporary short-time working compensation scheme—and there is no statutory requirement to notify the Department of Manpower Services when proposed redundancies do not take place.
