§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which other police forces in the United Kingdom, in addition to Manchester, have purchased submachine guns; what exactly these firearms were in each case; what steps he has taken to ensure that he is always informed of any such intended purchase in advance; and if he will recommend to chief constables that the purchase is made known to the public as well as beforehand to the police authority concerned.
§ Mr. Whitelaw:Police forces in the United Kingdom are not required to notify the Home Office of firearms purchases as this is a matter for individual chief officers of police. Guidance is given to the police by the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers jointly as to the types of firearms recommended. The current guidance does not recommend fully automatic weapons. I am not at present persuaded that the guidance which has been given needs to be extended.
