HC Deb 27 October 1981 vol 10 c309W
Mr. Wheeler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current estimated cost of collecting the £6 penalty for parking offences inclusive of all costs to the police and courts in the inner London area.

Mr. Mayhew:

The latest information available relates to 1978 and is contained in part IV—and annex K—of the report of the interdepartmental working party on road traffic law published in May. Figures for the inner London area are not separately available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Wheeler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the —6 fixed penalty for parking offences was last reviewed; and what the current penalty would be if due allowance had been made for inflation.

Mr. Mayhew:

The interdepartmental working party on road traffic law, in its report published in May 1981, recommended that the fixed penalty of £6 should be increased to £10. The Government have accepted this recommendation and will be acting upon it in conjunction with other recommendations. Exact conformity with movements in the general index of retail prices since 1975, when the fixed penalty was increased from £2 to £6, would produce a figure of about £12.
