asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in numbers and as a percentage of the total population the number of the people in work in each year from 1945.

Mr. Peter Morrison:

The available information is attached and relates to the middle of each year. The employed labour force consists of employees in employment, the self-employed and Her Majesty's Forces. The figures from 1945 to 1950* are for Great Britain; those for 1950† onwards for the United Kingdom. The methods of making employment estimates have changed on a number of occasions since 1945. In 1948 and 1959, when the changes led to discontinuities, two sets of figures are given: those marked‡ are consistent with the preceding figures and those marked** with the subsequent figures.
