HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 c287W

Mr. Field asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many (a) furnishd tenants, (b) unfurnished tenants and (c) licensed tenants there were at the latest available date.

Mr. Stanley:

In England at the end of 1977 there were 590,000 households in furnished and 1,830,000 in unfurnished privately rented accommodation. In addition, 5,090,000 households were renting from local authorities and new towns in March 1981 and 225,000 were renting from housing associations at the end of 1977: almost all were in unfurnished accommodation.

No figures are available of properties occupied under licence rather than under a tenancy agreement.
