Mr. Carter-Jones asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the number of specialist paediatric surgeons in each area health authority per 1,000 births; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts:

One full-time consultant is employed by the South Glamorgan health authority (teaching) and the Clwyd health authority is visited fortnightly by a consultant from the Liverpool health authority (teaching).

Neonatal Intensive Care Cots

Mr. Carter-Jones asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the number of neonatal intensive care cots available by hospital and region per 1,000 births in 1980; and if he will make a statement.

There is no designated neonatal intensive care unit in Wales. Some special care baby units provide an intensive level of care for very sick and very small babies.
