HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 c225W

Mr. Christopher Price asked the Minister for the Civil Service if she will set out in the Official Report those Government Departments that have separate library and information services, excluding press and information departments, those in which such facilities are provided on a co-operative basis, those Departments in which the library and information service also deals with public records for Public Record Office purposes and those in which such records are dealt with separately.

Mr. Hayhoe:

Questions of departmental organisation are the responsibility of Ministers concerned. I understand that in the major Departments the position is as follows:

  • Departments having their own library and information services.
  • Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
  • Central Office of Information.
  • Civil Service Department.
  • Her Majesty's Customs and Excise.
  • Ministry of Defence.
  • Department of Education and Science (including Office of Arts and Libraries).
  • Department of Employment (The Manpower Services Commission and the Health and Safety Commission and Executive have their own libraries).
  • Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
  • Department of Health and Social Security.
  • Board of Inland Revenue.
  • Lord Chancellor's Department.
  • Her Majesty's Treasury.
  • Scottish Office.
  • Welsh Office.
  • Departments sharing library and information services
  • Department of the Environment.
  • Department of Transport.
  • Home Office.
  • Northern Ireland Office.
  • Department of Industry.
  • Department of Trade.
  • Department of Energy.

In the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Her Majesty's Customs and Excise the library also deals with departmental records. In all the other Departments there are separate arrangements for records.
