HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 c270W

Mr. Pavitt asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if his Department will promote a campaign to encourage immunisation against German measles, in view of the fact that it is a major cause of deafness, on the lines of that conducted by the Brent area health authority, particulars of which have been sent to him by the hon. Member for Brent, South.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg:

In June 1979 health authorities were urged to intensify their vaccination programmes against congenital rubella and the Department launched a publicity campaign in support of their efforts. Some authorities were not able to start their local action until later. There are no plans to launch another national campaign but health authorities will need to continue their efforts in order to achieve and maintain the high targets set by the Department.
