HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 cc260-1W

Mr. Ernie Ross asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what funds his Department is granting to sponsor research work into the causes and treatment of epilepsy; and if he intends to increase them.

Mr. William Shelton:

The Medical Research Council, which receives a grant-in-aid from my Department, is the main Government agency funding research into the causes and treatment of epilepsy. In the financial year 1980–81 the council spent some £470,000 on research in this area, and is always ready to consider support for any further soundly based proposals of epilepsy research.

Other research on epilepsy is carried out in universities, and some of this is supported out of the funds made available by my Department through the University Grants Committee as block grants for teaching and research.
