§ Mrs. Renée Short asked the Secretary of State for Transport, whether he has any plans to alter the law regarding people buying new cars on the Continent and personally importing them into the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. David Howell [pursuant to his reply, 22 October 1981]: My concern is that the required safety and 208W environmental standards are met by cars coming into Great Britain. These standards are normally checked by our national type approval system from which some personal imports are exempted. I am reviewing the present arrangements for these imports to ensure they give adequate cover. No decisions have been taken and there would be full consultation before any changes were made.
