HC Deb 21 October 1981 vol 10 c144W

Mr. Marks asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will announce his decision on Manchester local education authority's proposals to reorganise its secondary schools.

Mr. Alfred Morris asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why there has still been no announcement of a decision on the city of Manchester's proposals for secondary school reorganisation; when he expects to announce his decision; and what recent representations his Department has received on the matter.

Dr. Boyson:

These proposals are complex and far-reaching in their consequences for Manchester's children, and my right hon. Friend has needed time to study them carefully. He is fully aware of the case for an early decision and will announce his conclusions as soon as possible. Three representations have been received urging early approval, including one from the city of Manchester and another from the campaign for a uniform system of education; two representations are in favour of further consideration and rejection, including one from the campaign for retention of 11 to 18 schools in Manchester.
