Mr. Christoper Price asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners in custody were in the following age groups at the latest convenient date (a) 14 to 18 years; (b) 19 to 25 years; (c) 26 to 45 years and (d) 46 to 65 years; and what proportion each of these groups represented of the population as a whole.

Mr. Mayhew: The most recent information readily available giving by age group the numbers and proportions of sentenced prisoners in prison department establishments in England and Wales is published in table 1(e) of "Prison Statistics, England and Wales 1980"—Cmnd. 8372.
