HC Deb 19 October 1981 vol 10 cc49-50W
Mr. Thornton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give a division of value added tax raised between different regions of the country, on any available regional split but preferably showing the difference between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, and the amount per head which this represents for population of these regions for the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne:

The amounts of VAT raised in the regions of the United Kingdom are not directly known. However, using estimates of the regional pattern of household expenditure and the latest population estimates, the amounts of tax that can be attributed to each standard region and the amounts that this represents per head of the population in 1980–81 are set out below:

Region VAT borne by residents £m Amounts per head of population £
North 590 190
Yorkshire and Humberside 05 185
North West 1,280 200
East Midlands 730 195
West Midlands 1,050 205
East Anglia 370 200
South East 3,795 225
South West 790 185
Region VAT borne by residents £m Amounts per head of population£
Wales 545 195
Scotland 975 190

The estimates cannot be further sub-divided.
