§ Mr. Thorntonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give a division of value added tax raised between different regions of the country, on any available regional split but preferably showing the difference between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, and the amount per head which this represents for population of these regions for the most recent year for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Bruce-Gardyne:The amounts of VAT raised in the regions of the United Kingdom are not directly known. However, using estimates of the regional pattern of household expenditure and the latest population estimates, the amounts of tax that can be attributed to each standard region and the amounts that this represents per head of the population in 1980–81 are set out below:
