HC Deb 19 October 1981 vol 10 c40W
Mr. Chris Patten

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the average output per man in British Leyland's major car plants in each of the last five years and at the latest date for which figures are available; and what are the comparable figures for major car plants in Japan, the United States of America, West Germany, France and Italy.

Mr. Norman Lamont:

Figures on BL's output per man are not available on a plant by plant basis. Such information, even if available, would be commercially confidential. The only available productivity figures for BL are those in the review of BL's 1980 performance, which was laid before Parliament in January 1981. Productivity figures for car plants in other countries are similarly unobtainable.

There are, in any case, a number of difficulties involved in comparing productivity between car plants, even in the same country.
