HC Deb 19 October 1981 vol 10 c76W
Mr. Torney

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how much revenue will be lost by Bradford university because of the increase in fees for overseas students;

(2) what reduction in student numbers will be caused by the increase in fees for overseas students at Bradford university.

Mr. Waldegrave:

My right hon. Friend has no estimate of the likely future effect of the withdrawal of the subsidy for overseas students on student numbers or fee income at individual universities. The number of overseas students entering the university of Bradford was 312 in 1979–80 and 201 in 1980–81.

Mr. Torney

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many staff at Bradford university are expected to be made redundant because of the cuts imposed upon the university.

Mr. Waldegrave:

My right hon. Friend has no estimate of the number of staff who may be made redundant at any individual university.

Mr. Torney

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science for what reasons the cuts imposed on Bradford university have been disproportionately larger than those imposed on other universities.

Mr. Waldegrave:

By long standing convention the allocation of recurrent grant to individual universities is a matter for the judgment of the University Grants Committee.
