HC Deb 26 November 1981 vol 13 c436W
Q31. Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Prime Minister what steps she proposes to take to reduce the number of persons held in custody on remand and the length of time they await in prison before trial.

Mr. Whitelaw

I have been asked to reply.

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister will continue to offer my noble and learned Friend the Lord Chancellor and me every encouragement in our pursuit of ways to expedite criminal trials so as to reduce both the number of remand prisoners and the time spent in custody awaiting trial.
