Mr. W. E. Garrettasked the Secretary of State for Transport if there are any plans to widen the A6127/6125 and A1 Tyne tunnel roads in the Tyne and Wear county council area from single to dual carriageways.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeThere are no plans to widen the A1—Tyne tunnel—trunk road for which the Secretary of State is the statutory highway authority. This road is dual carriageway throughout the County of Tyne and Wear. The Tyne tunnel, which is part of the A1, and the A6127/6125 are the responsibility of Tyne and Wear county council, the local highway authority. The council has not included any proposals for these in the recent transport policy and programme submitted to the Department.
