HC Deb 23 November 1981 vol 13 c311W
Sir Nicholas Bonsor

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Army personnel are allocated to home defence in the event of war; and how many of these are (a) Regulars and (b) Territorials.

Mr. Wiggin

At least 40,000 infantry will be dedicated to home defence. Supporting elements would raise the total figure in the United Kingdom in war to over 80,000, some 30 per cent. of the Army's total mobilised strength. Some two-thirds are regulars.
