§ Mr. Mayhew[pursuant to his reply, 12 November 1981 c. 123]: Precise information could be made available only at disproportionate cost. It is estimated that on 30 September 1981 about 20 persons awaiting trial in prison department establishments in England and Wales had been first remanded in custody more than 18 months earlier; some of them had spent some time on bail.
