HC Deb 17 November 1981 vol 13 c71W
56. Mr. Wiley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what specific action has been taken to reduce unemployment in Sunderland.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The reduction of unemployment in Sunderland, as in other parts of the country, will largely depend upon firms there producing the goods which people both at home and abroad want, and at prices they are prepared to pay. It is only in this way that the jobs which are so much needed will be created. Meanwhile, Sunderland will continue to benefit from my Department's special employment and training measures.

Sunderland is also to retain its special development area status so that firms setting up or expanding there and creating new jobs will be eligible for the maximum financial assistance available under the Industry Act.
