HC Deb 17 November 1981 vol 13 cc122-3W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many full-time and part-time places he expects will be available at (a) further education colleges, (b) central institutions and (c) colleges of education in 1982–83; and if he will provide figures for the two previous years.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The full-time equivalent numbers of students enrolled in vocational further education courses at the various kinds of institution in 1980–81 and the projected numbers for 1981–82 and 1982–83 are shown in the following table. Projections are not available separately for full-time and part-time enrolments.

(thousands)
Estimated number of students Projected number of students
(FTE) (FTE)
1980–81 1981–82 1982–83
Further education colleges 57.0 *56.5 55.8
Central institutions 13.3 13.7 14.0
Colleges of education 7.3 13.7 Not available
* This figure does not take account of actual enrolments at autumn 1981, for which statistics are not available. There are indications however that the projected figure will be substantially exceeded.
This figure does not take account of significant increases in student numbers likely to result from
(a) expansion of the Manpower Services' Commission Youth Opportunities Programme and of its training/further education contents;
(b) the availability of additional public resources, within the unemployment measures announced by the Prime Minister in July, to encourage staying on in full.time education.
Assumes approximately 1,000 full-time equivalent students on college-based in-service training, for which figures are not available
Numbers still to be determined.
