§ Mr. Bodyasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to amend section 2(3) of the Housing Act 1980 to enable tenants of local authorities to acquire the leasehold of their homes in cases where the local authority has acquired the head lease from the private sector and the tenants own the freehold.
§ Mr. StanleyThe Government have under consideration proposals for extending the right to buy to tenants whose landlord does not own the freehold of their homes. At present, ownership of the freehold gives the tenant no right to the intermediate interest held by the local authority; but the authority is free to sell that interest to the tenant if it chooses to do so.
