HC Deb 13 November 1981 vol 12 c202W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his Department's estimate of the number of people out of work in the latest unemployment. figures who have been unemployed for one full calendar year; and what is his Department's estimate of the number of people contained in this figure who generally could be described as being in the process of changing jobs.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At 8 October 1981, 784,636 people had been unemployed for more than 52 weeks in the United Kingdom.

While there are no statistics to indicate how many of the total number registered as unemployed were in the process of changing jobs, there is a continual flow of people on to and off the register. Recently, more than one-quarter of a million people have left the register each month, largely for jobs or training.
