HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 c171W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many proposals for improving the prevention of disability have been made to his Department in the past two years; what is his estimate of the cost of the proposals; and in how many cases the action proposed is being taken.

Dr. Vaughan

"Care in Action", which we published in February, asked health authorities to give high priority to the prevention of physical and mental ill-health and proposed a number of measures, including making genetic counselling more easily available, encouraging regular attendances for antenatal care and screening, and screening for disabilities in young children. The cost of these measures will depend on the extent and speed with which health authorities are able to act.
