§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Lord Privy Seal what recent representations he has made to the Chilean authorities concerning the case of William Beausire, a British passport-holder who disappeared in Chile in July 1975; if he will continue to press this with the Chilean authorities; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. LuceSince my right hon. and noble Friend raised this case with the Chilean Foreign Minister in September 1979, we have made regular representations to the Chilean Government, most recently on 2 June and 5 October. I regret to say that neither these representations, nor legal investigations have yet produced any result; but we shall continue to remind the Chilean Government of our concern and of their previous assurances of co-operation and to make it clear to them that we do not regard the case as closed. I intend to raise human rights questions, including the case of Mr. William Beausire, with the Chilean Minister of Labour and Social Security when he visits London next week.
