HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 c141W
Mr. Campbell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will take steps to require catalogues or brochures depicting goods for sale by mail order to describe the country of origin of manufacture.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

As I explained in the debate in Standing Committee on 1 April, I am satisfied that the practical costs and difficulties of including origin information in catalogues, including mail order catalogues, would be out of all proportion to the consumer benefit achieved. Catalogues will in these circumstances be exempted, on certain conditions, from the requirements of the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) (Miscellaneous Goods) Order 1981.
