Mr. Warren

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will ask the Director General of Fair Trading to investigate and report on the mark-up rates of spares for gas appliances being charged by the British Gas Corporation showrooms.

Investigations of matters of this kind under the competition legislation are a matter for the Director General of Fair Trading. I understand he has no plans for such an investigation at present, but if my hon. Friend has evidence to suggest that one would be warranted he should write to the Director General direct.
