HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 c134W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what percentage of electricity generation has come from (a) coal, (b) oil and (c) nuclear power for each year since 1970; and what are the projected percentages for 1990;

(2) what plans he has to increase the use of nuclear power stations in order to reduce the amount of electricity generated by oil by 1990; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

For the years since 1970, the information is given in the following table:

number of United Kingdom jobs which are directly dependent upon membership of the European Economic Community.

Mr. Alison

It would not be possible to isolate from among the many factors that have influenced employment since 1973 any which are solely due to our membership of the Community, and I cannot therefore offer a precise estimate.

I explained in my reply of 29 October to the hon. Member for Newham, South (Mr. Spearing)—[Vol. 10, c. 424.]—the basis on which the estimate of the number of jobs dependent on our exports to the rest of the Community had been made.
