HC Deb 11 November 1981 vol 12 cc102-3W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employ merit whether it is intended to extend the operations of the temporary short-time working compensation scheme.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The future of the temporary short-time working compensation scheme is currently under review. At present it is open for applications until 31 March 1982.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the cost of the temporary short-time working compensation scheme and the number of employees that have been involved.

Mr. Peter Morrison

From the inception of the temporary short-time working compensation scheme on 1 April 1979 to 30 September 1981 £589.3 million had been spent.

Because the scheme allows applicants to spread short-time working throughout the work force and to alter the pattern or the extent of short-time working as circumstances change, it is not possible to give the cumulative total of all employees who have ever received any compensation under the scheme.

In September 320,000 people were on short-time working, saving approximately 180,000 jobs stated by applicants to be potentially redundant.
