Because the scheme allows applicants to spread short-time working throughout the work force and to alter the pattern or the extent of short-time working as circumstances change, it is not possible to give the cumulative total of all employees who have ever received any compensation under the scheme.
In September 320,000 people were on short-time working, saving approximately 180,000 jobs stated by applicants to be potentially redundant.
