HC Deb 11 May 1981 vol 4 cc208-9W
Mr. Trippier

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what options are being considered for the form of a United Kingdom peacekeeping force in Belize.

Mr. Ridley

I have been asked to reply.

We have undertaken to make security arrangements appropriate to the circumstances in which Belize proceeds to independence. As I told the House on 17 March, we expect to negotiate treaties that will end Guatemala's territorial claim and thus do more than any other measure to ensure the future security of an independent Belize. Clearly the security requirements in these circumstances would be very different from those arising if there were no settlement.
