§ Mr. Brothertonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will conduct an investigation into the extent to which claimants of unemployment and supplementary benefits are refusing opportunities to become census enumerators.
§ Sir George YoungThe cost of such an investigation could not be justified. Claimants were able to refuse the opportunity at various stages of recruitment by ignoring the invitation sent by jobcentres, by not attending for interview or by not accepting a post offered. However, almost 22,000 people in receipt of unemployment benefit have accepted appointment.
