HC Deb 11 March 1981 vol 1000 c336W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what are the numbers of load limiters installed in domestic households by each of the electricity boards from their introduction into the United Kingdom to date;

(2) what information he has as to whether load limiters on the electricity supply are being installed in new council house building; and, if so, which local authorities have authorised the use of these devices.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Data are not available on the numbers of load limiters installed since the introduction of these devices. Numbers currently installed by four area boards are as follows:

South Western 65
East Midlands 10
Merseyside and North Wales 12*
Yorkshire 142
* Part of a trials sponsored by the board's consultative council, limited to a total of 20 devices.

As these figures show, load limiters are not widely used and they are installed only with the consent of the consumer. They are intended to limit electricity consumption to help reduce or avoid debt and the type of housing involved is not a factor.
