§ Mr. MayhewFollowing the decision in Regina v. Nottingham Justices ex parte Davies my right hon. Friend has received representations from two hon. Members. I understand that my right hon. and noble Friend the Lord Chancellor has received a number of representations to enlist his support for a draft Bill designed, as recommended by the Royal Commission on legal services, to enable defendants remanded in custody by magistrates' courts to apply to the Crown court for bail, and to make criminal legal aid available for the purpose. The public expenditure implications of this proposal are under consideration.
