HC Deb 29 June 1981 vol 7 c274W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied that there is appropriate liaison between primary and secondary schools to ensure compatibility of policy in the field of sex education and its role in the curriculum.

Dr. Boyson

A number of local education authorities have issued guidelines on health education which contribute towards ensuring continuity between primary and secondary schools. We emphasised the need for such continuity across the curriculum as a whole in our paper "The School Curriculum", which was published earlier this year.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will advise local education authorities to ensure that every primary school has a policy statement available to parents on sex education in their curriculum.

Dr. Boyson

It is important that there should be cooperation and consultation between parents and the schools in this field. That is why the Education (School Information) Regulations 1981 will require local authorities to inform parents about the manner and context in which sex education is provided.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many primary schools he estimates include sex education as part of their curriculum.

Dr. Boyson

Detailed information is not available, but appropriate aspects of sex education are covered in many primary schools.
