§ Mr. George Robertsonasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will introduce qualifications for motor cycle instructors similar to those laid down by his Department for motor car driving instructors;
(2) how many representations he has received about the qualifications for motor cycle instructors in the light of the road safety provisions of the Transport Bill.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeWe do not intend to lay down qualifications for motor cycle instructors to the same detailed extent as those for car driving instructors as we will rely on our powers to authorise suitable bodies to examine for part I of the motor cycle driving test and provide training. All instructors employed by training bodies authorised to conduct part I test will be expected to be fully competent motor cyclists. A small number of representations have been received about the qualifications for motor cycle instructors in response to the consultation paper on the proposed two-part motor cycle test and these are being considered.
