HC Deb 29 June 1981 vol 7 c302W
34. Mr. Garel-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what consideration has been given to action in respect of credit card surcharging.

35. Mr. Mawby

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what consideration has been given to action in respect of credit card surcharging.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

In its report on credit card franchise services published last September the Monopolies and Mergers Commission took the view that it was against the public interest for credit card companies to impose restrictions on traders preventing them from charging different prices to credit card and non-credit card customers. At my right hon. Friend's request the Director General of Fair Trading consulted interested parties on the steps to be taken following the report. We are still considering, in the light of the Director General's advice, what action to take.
