asked the Secretary of State for Energy what work is being done to encourage the installation and use of some form of automatic heat control in the homes of the elderly.

Three areas of work are currently under way which relate to those types of heating designed for automatic temperature control. They are:

  1. 1. To complete and publish a voluntary code for central heating installers encouraging them to include adequate controls in new installations.
  2. 2. To explain the value and use of heating controls to householders.
  3. 3. To encourage the growing practice in the heating industries of offering the fitting of controls at standard installation prices.
