Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what effect the lower than planned level of trunk road construction expenditure in 1980–81 had on (a) the rate of progress with schemes already started by April 1980, (b) the timing of new starts during the year, (c) the preparation of future schemes and (d) the timing of payments due on completed contracts.

The information is as follows:

  2. (b) A few schemes were held up for a short time to ensure that the cash limit was not exceeded. Tenders were invited for all of these before the end of the financial year and contracts have now been let.
