HL Deb 19 June 1981 vol 421 c846WA
Lord Melchett

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will introduce legislation designed to prevent the incidental killing of dolphin and porpoises by the Tuna Fishing Industry along the lines of the legislation now in force in the United States of America; and

Whether they or the Governments concerned intend to set a quota on the by-catch of dolphins and porpoises for the Tuna Fishing Industry based in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands along the lines of the quota imposed by the United States Government on their Tuna Fishing Industry.

Lord Carrington

Her Majesty's Government will soon be consulting the Governments of our dependent territories about extending to their territories the prohibition on the taking of dolphins and porpoises provided for in Clause 35 of the Fisheries Bill; in doing so, we shall have in mind the need to restrict incidental killing of marine mammals in the course of fishing for tuna.

House adjourned at eleven minutes before one o'clock.
