HC Deb 18 June 1981 vol 6 cc432-3W
Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons are unemployed in the Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane areas, respectively; what is the percentage unemployed; and what he expects the figures and percentages to be after the addition of the 626 persons at present working at the Courtaulds plant in Campsie, Londonderry.

Mr. Adam Butler

At 14 May 1981 the numbers unemployed in the Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane employment service office areas were 8,378, 2,097 and 3,176 respectively.

The percentage rates are 25.0 for Londonderry and Limavady, which together form one travel-to-work area, and 34.3 for Strabane.

It is not possible to predict what the level of unemployment in the Londonderry/Limavady/Strabane areas will be at the time of the Courtaulds closure.
